Womens Hour Bbc R 4:

Article Review   by:SM THOMPSON
ª

I tuned into BBC Womens Hour and it was an eclectic mix of los of different items of interest; the one that attracted most attention was the notion of disapproval of women who left the home and went out to work as their grown up children disaprove and would have preferred Mother to have stayed at home or done the British thing of working part time.
The Writer was quizzed on the subject and at 68 seems to have given way under the strain of the pressure but offered the olive branch that as a writer the job could be carried out in the home.

The other issue raised in this connection by the BBC Presenter was that of economic necessity where the Mother had to earn the money to put the bread on the table and where they didnt have much choice in order to pay the bills the rent and or mortgage:

Part time work is not the solution in my opinion as employers accuse women of pursing a hobby and therefore its not seen as acceptable work though from the family's point of view it might be alright its not seen as a satisfactory solution in terms of work and pay and often its been said to me that all a women who seeks part time work is after is looking for pocket money and has no commitment to career or to work as something that has to be done in the main by men who can give the full time commitment necessary for the completion of essential work; the conflict continues: in terms of disapproval of family experts have advised dthat its not useful to fall in line with childish requests as these are the voice of a teacher not of the current society in which you live and giving into little Johnney and his wishes would produce the spoilt child!

C Section and Turkish childbirth was also discussed and the PM in Turkey is restricting C Section births except in cases of emergency and the reason offered is that the fear of childbirth is a reason for C Section which is not
acceptable to the Turkish government! Hard work pays UP!
