Background:
Science is sometimes wonderful and it is still on the frontier of gaining new knowledge. In the world of science where there is already a big crowd of ethically challenged procedures like test-tube babies, abortion cloning and other biotechnological procedures; here is one more to add this crowd –
“USE OF
STEM CELLS TO TREAT VARIOUS DISEASE.”
Stem cells are the root cells and are the origin for all other cell types.
Researchers at ‘National center for scientific research.’ In Montpellier, France and ‘The European Hospital, Georges in a group of 9 sheeps,
mice stem cells.
Method and design:
Ø The sheeps, suffered from
heart attack were divided in to two groups.
Ø One of the group received immunosuppressant drugs prior to the study.
Ø The embryonic stem cells from mice, which were not completely undifferentiated; were collected and coaxed in to developing heart cells.
Ø These cells were supposed to complete their growth and differentiation in-vivo.
Results:
Ø One month later the
sheeps were found with healthier hearts, due to formation of new heart cells.
Ø The stem cells were not rejected by any of the group irrespective of the use of immunosuppressants.
Future Prospectus:
1. Researchers believe that one-day heart disease in human beings can be treated by this technique.
2. One more ray of hope is that, these methods may be used to treat the
diseases like Alzheimer’s disease and Parkinson’s disease.
Conclusion:
Everyday new research, everyday a new invention, and every moment life is being easier and easier. But one more truth is that everyday new disease, everyday a new problem and challenge is given by the nature to the human being.
Here is again a new step towards making life much easier by treating diseases like heart diseases and Alzheimer’s disease, which are most common diseases. And the success of this experiment of treating heart disease in sheeps by using stem cells of the mice is the ray of hope for the same.
But there is a controversy for any research. In the above experiment embryonic cells are needed. Many pregnant animals are to be sacrificed for this purpose. This puts a big question from ethical point of view. But a big truth is also that, only those who dare to fail greatly can ever achieve greatly.
