Antioxidants are the substances which may protect human and animal cells from the damage caused by unstable free radicals. Antioxidants are so powerful that they can neutralize free radicals before they damage our body cells. Fruits and vegetables provide a range of antioxidants viz., carotenoids , flavanoids, vitamins A, C and E etc. High level of antioxidants are present in apple, green grapes, grapefruit, oranges, peach, red plums, strawberries, beetroot, sprouts, cauliflower, green cabbage, lettuce, onion, spinach, tomatoes, nuts, grains , some types of meat and poultry. Antioxidants impart protection against heart disease, stroke, cancer etc. Hence care must be taken to include fruits and vegetables in our daily diet in order to ensure the daily supply of antioxidants.
