With the growing surge in the prevalence and incidence of Type II Diabetes Mellitus, it is an obligation on the medical fraternity to discern ways to prevent the incidence and at the same time cure for the cases of type II diabetes. Lifestyle modification is the cornerstone of both treatment and attempts to prevent type II diabetes. Obesity, sedentary lifestyle and irregular dietary habits are the main determinants for the establishment of type II diabetes. Obesity sets off insulin resistance, so all lifestyle-related and environmental factors which contribute to excess weight gain may be regarded as contributing to type II diabetes. Central adiposity or waist-to-hip ratio are more specific determinant of Type- II Diabetes mellitus than obesity. Voluntary weight loss improves Insulin Sensitivity and reduces the risk of progression from impaired glucose tolerance to Type- II Diabetes mellitus Increased physical exercise has the potential to substantially enhance insulin sensitivity. Dietary components like soluble fibers, wholegrain cereals, fruits & vegetables, long chain polyunsaturated fatty acids, Omega-3 fatty acids are helpful in controlling the progression of Type II diabetes where as Saturated fatty acids, Trans fatty acids, energy dense food, free or added sugar diet provoke the progression of disease. High intake of total fat has been associated with Impaired Glucose Tolerance and with reduced Insulin Sensitivity. Central Council For Research in Homoeopathy has found marked affect of Cephalandra indica and Rhus aromaticus in Diabetes mellitus.
