Are we subjecting the health of our kids to risks for the convenience of fast food? These days, French fries are an integral part of kids’ menu as ‘extra’ item. High calorie French fries are a big health risk and their consumption is increasing year by year.
There are three reasons that French fries should be boycotted. First, they contain high level of saturated fats which can raise the levels of cholesterol and Triglycerides which may cause serious diseases. Secondly, French fries usually made of white potatoes give quickly absorbing surplus carbohydrates leading to rise in Insulin levels. It may cause resistance to Insulin leading to Diabetes and heart diseases. Thirdly, French fries contain Trans fatty acids and acrylamide that can cause cancer.
The fast food industry’s claims of switching to less harmful foods are not enough and a lot more needs to be done.
There are three healthier options to take potatoes. First, instead of frying, they should be baked thus avoiding extra fat without losing taste. Secondly, instead of conventional white potatoes, healthier yams and sweet potatoes should be used. Lastly, minimum amount of starch servings should be eaten.
