Edulcorantes Artificiales
Are
artificial
sweeteners
safe?
While rumors are circulating that the link with the development of cancer, there
is no scientific evidence to support this assertion. These are the maximum amounts recommended for consumption.
Sugar seems to be everywhere, or at least what we think is rich: cakes, candy, ice cream, candy and soft drinks, among other sweets. For those with weight problems, this can become a nightmare, and that sugar is a major source of "empty calories" ie it provides energy in the form of calories but few essential nutrients. Also the sugar is inconvenient for people with diabetes or high triglycerides.
The
sweeteners
or artificial sweeteners are chemicals that can be between 50 and 600 times more than sugar sweeteners, they provide little or no calories and can satisfy the urge to eat something sweet without violating the diet. As a result, have gained wide acceptance among consumers who use them in place of table sugar and light products such as yoghurts, desserts, soda, candy, baked goods, among others.
Artificial sweeteners are not the exception, and in some cases, such as cyclamate, have been studied in over 100 clinical trials, according to the FDA, the agency responsible for food control in the United States. None of these investigations showed evidence of a relationship between sweeteners and cancer in humans. In addition, major medical institutions and international and national food control such as FDA and the Joint Expert Committee on Food Additives of the World Health Organization and the United Nations Food and Agriculture (FAO), have stated that sweeteners are suitable for consumption.
However, the suspicions against sweeteners began to emerge when it issued a series of
laboratory
studies conducted in rats, according to which cyclamate in combination with saccharin could cause bladder cancer. Since then, similar studies related to aspartame and cyclamate with different types of cancers in laboratory animals.
In other words, there is currently no evidence that sweeteners on the market produce cancer in humans.
