A diet high in
lutein and
zeaxanthin (found in yellow
or dark leafy vegetables) and
vitamin E helps to
protect against the development of cataracts, according to a publication in Archives of Ophthalmology.
Oxidative damage can lead to
cataract formation and foodstuffs containing vitamin E, lutein and zeaxanthin, can protect against these
changes.Since lutein and zeaxanthin are the only type of carotenoids(sources of vit A) found in human lenses, their protective role is evident. The research involved more than 30000 people studied over a period of 10 years based on their dietary intake. These prospective data, Dr. Christen and colleagues note, indicate a
decreased risk of cataract with higher intakes of lutein/zeaxanthin and
vitamin E.Arch Ophthalmol 2008;126:102-109.
