Hydrocephaly, or hydrocephalus, is an accumulation of cerebrospinal
fluid inside the
skull usually resulting from an obstructionÑsuch as a tumor, an inflammation, or a congenital abnormalityÑin the normal circulation of the fluid. It occurs most often in newborns, accompanying certain genetic diseases. In young
children the
pressure from accumulated fluid expands the skull, sometimes greatly. When the skull bones are fused, as in older children and adults, the unrelieved pressure on the brain and cranial nerves causes headaches, problems with vision, nausea, and vomiting.
