Previous case studies identified sleeping on prone as risk for developing SIDS.
 Study from 1998 to 2001 in Germany
was to identify risk factors for SIDS in sleeping environment. 333 SID cases and 998 matched controls were used. 4.1 % were laid on prone position when sleeping but risk of SIDS increased in these infants.Factors associated with SIDS were found to be bed sharing ,particularly for infants less than 13 weeks, use of Duvets,sleeping prone on sheepskin, sleeping on friemd's house or relative vs parental home and sleeping in the living room vs parental bedroom.
Pacifier use is associated with decreased risk
Limitation of the study: small number of cases with some novel risk factors.
