Cancer is a dreaded disease. Not only the disease is painful, its treatment and after effects are also painful. Times of India dated Mar 18, 10 discusses this topic. Chemotherapy is one of the treatments for this disease. But now there is “Dota”-a radioactive drug, which is injected into the body and targets the tumour like a magic bullet and thus kills the abnormal cells. It is not painful, but it costs Rs. 1.5 lakh. In the earlier procedure, the cancerous tumour is removed by surgery and several sessions of chemotherapy and radiation are followed. But chemotherapy gives physical and psychological scars on the patient. The new treatment jointly arranged by HealthCare (HCG) Bangalore and BARC Trombay, is being done in a personalized way. Presently the method is partly chemotherapy and a large part is drugs costing around Rs. 0.80 to 1.1 lakh per dose. The only side effect is the normal fatigue, which occurs after such high-dose treatments. Avoiding chemotherapy in India fully, may take some time, due to economic reasons. Also the level of disease varies from patient to patient and the body must accept this drug. As per WHO, India and China are expected to have highest number of cases of cancer.
