Gregorian Chant: Songs of the Spirit

Movie Review by: CatherineGallagher

This is primarily a performance film. It is the performance of the MISSA DE BEATA MARIA VIRGINE in Gregorian chant by the
Gregorian Chant Choir of Spain, under the direction of Ismael Fernandez de la Cuesta. There are panoramas and vistas of various churches and monasteries in Europe shown, particularly in Spain; of various works of art, particularly sculptures and carvings, including some tombstones and funereal objects; the architecture of various churches and monasteries; and many paintings, as well as illuminated manuscripts, mostly of Gregorian chant from the medieval period. These are all shown as the Choir sings the chants while the artworks are shown on the screen. There are various short discussions of the conductor's and others experiences with Gregorian chant, and its historical and spiritual significance. There are also, of course, shots of the choir performing alone, and with a soloist. It is a very peaceful experience. Listening to it even as a backdrop to other work is very relaxing. Yet, if watched, it is also an very moving artistic and even a spiritual experience.
