Cube is an amazingly dark and deep movie from 1997.
The film is filled with metaphors and hidden signs: for example
every character in the movie is named after a famous (or infamous) prison. The reputaion of that prison is implying the character's personallity.
I will not involve spoilers in this review so i will not tell what is going on in the realy cool opening scene although it doesn't effect the plot in any manner.
The movie tells the dark and horrific story of ordinary simple people who wakes up in strange, nightmerish, cube-shaped maze who is filled with deadly traps.
Needless to say that they can't remember how they got there or who kidnapped them and they have no idea how to get out of there.
From this point thier journey inside the cube begins. During thier attempt of survivle they will constantly try to analyse thier sitution and to understand how and why they got to this sitution.
This actually what gives the movie its deep psychological and philosophical aspects.
Later on they will find out that in addition of defending themselves from the traps they will have to defend from each other...
The first time I saw this movie I all alone in my house at night and the only light that was on in all of the house was the screen of the tv...
I didnt wet my pants but I sure was close...
The movie have two sequels: "
hyper cube" (2002) and "
Cube zero" (2004).
Both were far more "invested" from the budget view but far inferior compered to the first one (in my opinion).
So you don't have to watch the other two but if you can get your hands on copy, "Cube" is a must!
