Having triumphed in theatres in half the world, including here in Spain under the direction of Nina, Mamma Mia, the most
cheerful musical, arrives on the big screen. The comedy and the romanticism are intertwined with the songs of the legendary group
"Abba", resulting in a movie to remember, though, of course, only in it''s genre.
From the first scenes, the film reminds you of the style of similar movies, such as the famous "Grease" (1978) or the more recent "Hairspray" (2007). In other words, any moviegoer who has enjoyed those movies or musicals in general will enjoy this film. And even more, of course, if you are a fan of "Abba" and their more successful songs such as "Dancing Queen", "Waterloo", and, of course, "Mamma Mia".
Although the plot could be considered a farce, it also has a strong romantic element. The main storyline follows the search for the father of the protagonist, a young girl named Sophie (Amanda Seyfried). Since there are three possible candidates according to the notes her mother, Donna (Meryl Streep), kept in her diary, Sophie decides to invite the three men to her wedding to uncover the secret. The trio is made up of an adventurer, Bill (Stellan Skarsgard), a banker, Harry (Colin Firth), and an architect, Sam (Pierce Brosnan).
Compared with the theatrical version, the songs have not been dubbed, so you hear the cast singing. But, accompanied by the corresponding subtitled translation, they help tell the story. The absolute highlight is Meryl Streep ("Death Becomes Her", "Adaptation"), not only when interpreting the songs, but in giving life to her character, an unmarried woman who runs a hotel. Pierce Brosnan ("Die Another Day", "Blackmail") returns with the elegant style that he has played with great success, but lagged behind somewhat in terms of the songs. The rest of the cast is more or less the same: engaged well with their roles, but did not sing as well as hoped.
In conclusion, "Mamma Mia!" will satisfy a wide range of audiences, from comedy fans to those who enjoy musicals and romantic movies. Of course, fans of "Abba" should not miss this movie. The plot has some originality with a few unexpected twists and a few of the gags are really funny. Entertainment and laughter are certainly guaranteed.
