Scarlett O'Hara, who lives with her sisters, Suellen, and Careen in rural Georgia with her parents Gerald O'Hara and Ellen O'Hara who are immigrants in Georgia with Irish origin. They live on a large coffee plantation called Tara. Scarlett is madly in love with one of her friends from the county. Ashley is set to be engaged to his cousin Melanie. She confesses her love to Ashley in a bid to win him, but Ashley chooses Melanie over Scarlett as he feels that they are more alike. This conversation is overheard by Rhett Butler who promises to keep Scarlett’s secret safe with him. In a fit of rage the headstrong Scarlett marries Melanie’s brother Charles, before he leaves for the battle as the war has just broken out. Unfortunately, she is widowed a few months after her wedding, as Charles dies of pneumonia and measles. A few weeks after Charles death, at a charity bazaar in Atlanta, Scarlett accepts a large bid for a dance with her by Rhett, who has intents of winning Scarlett, but meets her outright non acceptance. Scarlett takes care of Melanie while Ashley is away in the war; she helps Melanie deliver her baby and then moves them to Tara and begins a journey to survive as most of the town has been burnt down. She goes back to Rhett in Atlanta hoping to marry him and get some money, but her hopes are dashed when Rhett announces that all his foreign accounts have been blocked. On her way back to Tara she encounter’s her sisters’ fiancé Frank Kennedy who owns a general store and a lumbar mill. She cheats him into getting married to her and buys a saw mill that coins money. She also gets Ashley to accept a job in her mill. In a melee with the Union troops, while she, Frank and Ashley are raiding a nearby shantytown, Ashley gets injured and Frank killed.
She visits Rhett in Atlanta a few days after Frank’s death and is shocked when Rhett proposes to her, and she agrees in order to get her hands his money. They honeymoon in New Orleans and after a while she gives birth to their daughter Bonnie Blue Butler. Some days after this, one of Ashley’s cousins India, who has always strongly disliked Scarlett, overhears a nostalgic conversation between Ashley and Scarlett and spreads the rumors about the 2 of them. Rhett is jealous and furious on hearing this and confronts Scarlett who asks him to keep away from her. Rhett is in no mood to be turned down tonight and carried her to their bedroom and makes loves to her. The next morning Rhett goes to Scarlett and offers his apology about his behavior the earlier night and also offers a divorce. Scarlett rejects this idea saying it would be a disgrace. Rhett decides to take Bonnie on a holiday to London after that. Rhett returns after his vacation and Scarlett is delighted to see him and talks of reconciling with him, but Rhett turns down her attempts. He also states that she is looking different to which she says that she is pregnant and isn’t happy about the pregnancy. He jokes to her saying that she could have an accident. Scarlett suffers a miscarriage almost immediately this, after falling down the stairs. Rhett is sad and guilty, and shares his feelings with Melanie, but keeps his promise of not letting her know about Scarlett and Ashley. While Scarlett is recovering from the miscarriage, another tragedy strikes her, when Bonnie dies in a fall, while jumping a fence with her pony. Melanie comes to comfort Scarlett while they are laying Bonnie to rest, but suffers a miscarriage that she was warned could kill her. On her deathbed, Melanie asks of Scarlett to take care of Ashley as she had taken care of her while Ashley was away. Ashley is completely broken when he hears of Melanie’s condition. Melanie also tells Scarlett of Rhett’s love for her and that she should be kind to him. It’s only now that Scarlett realizes how much Ashley loves Melanie and that she was just a friend for him and that she loved something that never existed. She runs back home to find Rhett packing his bags to leave, she tells him that she has realized that she was in love with him all along and not Ashley. But Rhett has enough of her, he is going. She pleads asking about what would happen to her, where would she go? To which Rhett replies “Frankly, my dear, I don't give a damn”. Scarlett is left all alone, but she decides to go back home and then think of some way to get him back. After all, tomorrow is another day!"
