Woody Allen's latest "masterpiece", this flick revolves around two best friends, Vicky and Cristina, who visit Barcelona
for the summer and both get involved with a straight-forward casanova cum artist and his quite-crazy, possibly even borderline-insane wife.
I expected quite a lot from this movie, to be honest. All three screenings at the film festival that I went to were fully booked and they had to add an extra screening, in which me and my gal pal had to sit at the very front row, even. Plus, the last Woody Allen movie I had seen <"Match Point"> is way up in my books. I was psyched for this one.
Unfortunately, I was not so psyched by the movie itself.
Penelope Cruz gave a very powerful performance and the dialogue was funny at parts. The sepia-ish
cinematography was notable and the Penelope and Scarlett make out sessions gave me goosebumps (the good kind!). But other than that, I wasn't jumping up and down. Realistic as it was, I wasn't really in the mood for realism that day. I was in the mood for drama, for twists, for unexpected pregnancies. But I guess this is what happens when you enter a movie with the utmost expectations. Maybe you'll enjoy it; maybe you won't. The Penelope-Scarlett actions would possibly persuade me to give this movie a second go. Not on the big screen, though.
