Journey to the Center of the Earth

Movie Review by: MichelleB

There are plenty of thrills in this 3-D adventure movie based on the classic novel by Jules Verne. Professor Trevor Anderson
(Brendan Fraser) has dedicated his science lab to his brother, Maxwell, who mysteriously disappeared. One day Trevor discovers handwritten notes in his brother’s copy of the book Journey to the Center of the Earth. Trevor’s brother believed as Verne did that there were volcanic tubes leading to Earth's core. To find out what really happened to his brother, Trevor drags his nephew Sean (Josh Hutcherson) on a quest to Iceland. A gorgeous mountain guide named Hannah (Anita Briem) leads them to a dormant volcano to find a sensor that monitors seismic activity. What they find instead is an incredible journey to the earth’s center. Trevor and Hannah take turns saving each other’s life as the trio encounters one spectacular predicament after another.
    “We’re still falling!” - Trevor

The entire adventure is enhanced by stunning 3-D special effects. No blue and red glasses required. You can enjoy illusions such as Trevor spitting water in your face and a magnetized pocket knife floating toward you. With the 3-D and advance CGI, you really feel like you are…
…rappelling down a pitch dark 26-story hole to an abandoned mine shaft
…careening through a treacherous mine car rollercoaster ride
…plunging miles and miles (and miles) down to the center of the earth
…discovering giant dandelions, enormous mushrooms, and beautiful luminescent birds
“Haven’t you ever seen a dinosaur before?” – Sean
“NOT WITH SKIN ON IT!!” – Trevor

The creatures in “this world within a world” are so glad to see visitors that they hungrily invite them to dinner - flying piranhas, snake-like sea serpents, carnivorous plants, and a nasty drooling T-Rex. But temperatures are rising fast, and the only way back to the surface before they cook to death is to be air-lifted by a geyser. Lots of PG action, just-in-time save the day situations, and corny one-liners in the entertaining film fit for the entire family.
Many of the events in the movie are taken the Verrne novel. For more details about this book, read the review by MarkAskeda at http://www.shvoong.com/books/novel/1893470-journey-center-earth/
