Love Aaj Kal

Movie Review by: OpinionMaster

It is tough to review a product when it doesn't have too many good things to boast off.Cinema is no different particularly
when you expect a lot.Love aaj kal, by imtiaz ali was great in its concept.Basically, the film deals with love, the way it was generations ago and the way it is percieved now by todays youth. Saif and Deepika are youngster who fancy each other. They don't take their relationship very seriously ,something common in the current generation. Rishi Kapoor who plays his age in the flick are surprised by the casual stance of Saif and narrates his love story with Harleen, a shy punjabi girl,to tell him how different it was in those times, the hardships they faced. The film actually tries to hammer in the point that though the expression of love may change with time, the basic essence and depth of the feeling still remains the same.Imtiaz has been innovative in casting Saif to play "younger" Rishi, one reason why the film stood out a bit.Saif deserves credit for essaying the dual role of Jai and Veer with tremendous ease. The body language is so different in both the characters, you simply admire Saif's capacity as an actor. Deepika, I really don't know ,whether she has done a good job. Deep there, you still feel she could have been more impressive. Maybe it's just a feeling or may be it's as per design.Harleen was cute as a debutant. The mood of those olden days were captured well with her performance along with Saif. Rahul Khanna should have been desperate to have signed for this film considering the amount of screen space he occupiesThe scene which shows Harleen sneaking out a cup of black tea for Veer waiting outside her house, who has travelled all the way from Punjab to Calucutta just to a have a glimpse of his love,is fabuluous and really touching.Music by Pritam is average with the melodius one being hummable and the hip hop ones completely forgettable. Maybe I am not cut out for faster numbers. The sets depicting Punjab of Rishi's time looked fake at times. .The concept was good and so was the directors conceptualization. However the storyline lacked the base to support the concept.I am sure the general audience would have expected something more in the story in the second half
