You Don't Mess With the Zohan (Adam Sandler)

Movie Review by: nhicho

ABOUT A MOVIE: YOU DON’T MESS WITH THE ZOHAN (ADAM SANDLER)
Let’s face it; I’ve never been a fan of
Adam Sandler’s films (I said his films, not him), and I’m also not a fan of slapstick, but when I saw the cover of “You don’t mess with the Zohan” I had to see it.  I mean, did you see Adam’s legs?
So, I cuddled up in bed with snacks and a glass of wine and watched the movie with great anticipation…only to confirm once more: I’m NOT a fan of slapstick! I mean, does people actually find this sort of stuff funny?  Is it funny to toss fish up in the air only to catch it in your crack? (yes, your butt!)  And then there’s the ‘sexual connotation’ hair wash scene in the salon. Not funny. Not enticing. Not sensual. To call it absurd would be a compliment. Call it disgusting and we’re getting warmer.  Ultimately I would simply call it distasteful and inappropriate.  It could have been done better!
Being a very talented actor, Adam Sandler is capable of so much more. Making films like these seems an insult to his talent (although he wrote and produced the film!).
The storyline revolves around a top Israeli military agent who envisions him the greatest hairdresser ever. So he fakes his death and escapes to the freedom of New York – where you can be anyone and do anything (according to the script, that is).  Once in New York, he realizes fulfilling your dream is not that simple and he takes on a job in a little salon.  Off course the inevitable happens and he becomes the salon’s top hairdresser – in more ways than one!  What happens after a Palestinian cab driver recognizes him for the military agent he once was, you’ll have to rent the DVD.
In closing, the film had potential, but was ruined by silly, unnecessary ‘humor’.  Think the grenades in the deep fryer. Think the piranha scene. Think the stupidity of his endeavors at the salon.  And so on.
For die-hard Adam Sandler and slapstick fans only.
(Raking in nearly $200 million worldwide, there appear to be plenty out there!)
