"The
Exorcism of Emily
Rose"
** Stars
This
movie is based on an exorcism that happened in 1976 to Anneliese
Michael, a girl living in Bavaria. A couple of years later, a
recording of the rights was played in a
courtroom and it left the
people there crying and
scared.
This version takes place in America and mainly in a very drab
courtroom. Laura Linney and Cambell Scott play attorneys grappling over
whether or not Father Moore (Tom Wilkinson) should be tried for
negligent homicide. The prosecution believes that Emily Rose was not
really possessed but instead suffered from epileptic seizures.
Linney's
character is Erin Bruner, the defense attorney who says she's
an agnostic and Scott's character is Ethan Thomas, the prosecutor who is
convientelly a devout christian. Both of the actors are skilled and
bring a level of interest in even the dullest of
pictures. In this
film, the best scene includes the two in a verbal duel.
Don't get excited though, there are not many good scenes.
Directed by Scott Derrikson, who also helped write the rather
flavorless script, "Emily Rose" is only a little scary and doesn't do
anything new or inventive. Essencially two pictures, a
courtroom drama and a thriller, the movie really falls short of being
effective in either.
