Before
Mean Girls rocked theaters, Lindsay Lohan starred in another teen comedy by the title of
Confessions of
a Teenage Drama Queen. Unfortunately for her and the rest of us, it lacks wit, jokes and effective implementation.
Based on the book by Dyan Sheldon, Lohan stars as Lola, a New York teen who moves to New Jersey very much against her wishes. She soon snags the lead in the school play, but her tendency to be a bit dramatic and over-the-top puts her at odds with the school bitch, Carla (Megan Fox), a rich, snobby and conceited creature. As Lola struggles to make it to the farewell concert of her favorite band, she has to overcome her unrealistic expectations and shoot for something a little more grounded.
As you can tell, the plot is really quiet pathetic. This story has been told a hundred times before and will be told a hundred times more before anyone really tires of repeating it. Most high school comedies share similar themes - mean, rich, popular girls and either a school play or prom to shoot for - but it takes some magic to turn those cliché themes into something entertaining. Mean Girls pulled it off with ease thanks to clever writing and effective direction, but Confessions of a Teenage Drama Queen lacks both good writing and good direction. Director Sara Sugarman really wasn''t impressive as the various dream sequences seemed more weird than clever, but what really hurts the film is a lack of an intelligent screenplay. Most anyone can direct a movie like this, but it takes a witty screenplay to convince audiences to like it - Confessions lacks strong jokes and interesting characters.
