Ben and Jen - that is, Ben Stiller and Jennifer Aniston - team up for
Along Came Polly, a funny but generic romantic
comedy that will entertain, at least for a while.
Stiller, who has a ton of films coming out later this year (Starsky and Hutch, Dodgeball, Envy), stars as a risk analyst who never goes out of his bounds. On his honeymoon, he walks in on his wife (Debra Messing) and her scuba instructor having sex (with their flippers still on, no less), so he returns home to start a new life. Such a thing includes asking the beautiful Polly out, a girl he has known since junior high. Polly (Aniston) is a little flaky and definitely not reserved; she is the complete opposite of him in everyway. Nevertheless, she is hot and thus sticks around the rest of the movie as the two struggle to be a normal couple. Things get difficult when his wife returns.
Stiller thrives in such films as this, where he can play a nervous, neurotic guy with little confidence and a flair for getting into trouble with toilets. He is no less funny here (though starting to appear a bit repetitive), and plays the part well. The character of Polly is a little harder to like, even though she is a main character, and I never really felt as though I got to know her. Aniston plays the part moderately well, but the screenplay does not do a good job of making the character interesting. The character really isn''t funny and has no background to make us like her.
