Breaking up with a girl is never fun, but when she''s a needy, psychotic superhero
who could and will make your
life a living hell, it''s an even more delicate situation.
Uma Thurman and Luke Wilson star in My Super Ex-Girlfriend , a delightful
though somewhat uninspiring action-comedy-romance.
Wilson plays Matt Saunders, a regular guy who finds good times with an attractive
but uptight woman named Jenny Johnson (Thurman). The
sex is amazing, but there is something off about her, and he soon realizes
she is rather neurotic, clingy and jealous, especially of Matt''s beautiful
co-worker Hannah (Anna Faris). When Matt realizes that he is indeed in love
with Hannah and that Jenny is a psycho bitch, he tries to break it off with
her, but there''s just one small problem: Jenny Johnson is also G-Girl, the
city''s superhero. Suddenly, Matt finds himself under the wrath of the most
powerful woman in the world. His car ends up in outer space, a great white
shark gets thrown through his window, the word "Dick" gets burned into
his forehead, and other common breakup things ensue.
My Super Ex-Girlfriend is not an amazing film, and it could have
been better. There are stretches that could have been funnier given the right
screenplay, and Rainn Wilson, best known for Dwight on NBC''s "The Office",
is not used to his full potential (but is still pretty funny). There are some
hit-or-miss parts. The scenes where G-Girl is in costume are a little too cheesy
for their own good; director Ivan Reitman never takes full advantage of the
superhero scenes to contrast the rest of the movie. At the same time, the fast-motion
graphics utilized in the final "battle" scene are quite entertaining in their
own way.
