Mark Wahlberg, of
Three Kings and
The Perfect Storm fame, goes for the smaller film in
The Yards, a
movie that has a cast that is much larger than its potential. Besides Wahlberg, who is one of the best up and coming actors, the other key characters are played by Joaquin Phoenix (
Gladiator), Charlize Theron (
The Cider House Rules), and James Caan (
The Godfather).
Unfortunately, The Yards is a little too slow paced to keep up with its acting talent, and has a very inconclusive ending that leaves you to wonder what was so special about this film in the first place to have it made.
In terms of dialogue, acting, and premise, The Yards is quite convincing, but it obviously takes more than that to make a good movie. The only real flaw the movie has is that it is boring; the storyline takes forever to get from Point A from Point B, and everything in between is just filler. It probably did not help that I watched this movie at one in the morning.
