"Proof," a "Beautiful Mind" rip-off that still manages to pack a punch, stars Gwenyth Paltrow as the daughter of a famous
but insane mathematician who fears that she is also starting to lose her mind.
With her father now gone and her more stable sister around to tell her just how crazy she is, Catherine (Paltrow) is on the verge of mental collapse. She fears that she has inherited her father''s insanity and her paranoia only makes it worse. When she falls in love with one of her dad''s ex-students (Jake Gyllenhaal) who believes that within one of her father''s booklets lies the proof for a seemingly impossible pattern, her sanity and own mathematical genius are put to the test.
Okay, so perhaps it was a bit unfair to compare "Proof" to "A Beautiful Mind." Both are about mentally unstable mathematicians, and both had superb casts (this one also stars Anthony Hopkins in a supporting role). Other than that, the two are quite a bit different, except that "A Beautiful Mind" was a bit more well done.
