The recent study by the Centre for the Study of Adolescence on teenagers’ sex involvement in schools is appalling.
Even
after the concerted efforts to create HIV/Aids awareness in primary and secondary schools, it is shocking that the young generation continues to be careless.
It is important to note the war against reckless behaviour among teenagers will never be won if parents continue to delegate their
parenting duties to teachers. Parents rejected sex
education subject in schools but it is clear our education system is wanting on HIV/Aids and reproductive health.
Sex education must be entrenched in our curriculum now. The message about the HIV/AIDS scourge must be relayed clearly.
Parents should uphold their duty of proper parenting. And poverty alleviation efforts should be more to reduce the the vulnerability of children in rural areas and even urban poor.
It is unfortunate young girls are being enticed with cheap things like chips, airtime, money and gifts in exchange for sex. What has our society come to?
It was evident from the report that lack of sex education in schools and high poverty levels in the rural areas have resulted hugely in the appalling trend.
And as the Kenya National Association of Parents Secretary-General Musau Ndunda put it, parents have missed the point in using schools as dumping grounds.
