What is the role of media? Does it end with creating awareness among people and publishing news? Or does the role stretch far beyond from the above conventional stuff? media in India have a constructive role to play other than messing around with politics, scandals etc., in order to increase their circulation.

India is in a very crucial economic state from where it can grow exponentially, only if its people can contribute for its economic growth. What does an average Indian know about its current Economic State? Does entrepreneurship boil in the blood of an average Indian? Does he know how fast he can grow if he can capitalize the opportunities that lies ahead of him in the vibrant Indian Economy? All he talks about is unemployment, poverty, lack of opportunities and he does not want to work more but want to be paid more? An average Indian is a pessimist waiting for somebody to pull him out of his miseries, individualism lacks to the core in every Indian and they want to imitate others throughout their lives? Has the media done something to improve this state of India? The answer is No!

Media has only contributed in developing a pessimistic country that is sitting on a golden opportunity but failing to capitalize it to the full extent. ‘India Today’ is no exception! Politics, corruption and other not so constructive stuff fills in its pages. News that is of no constructive value, occupy its headlines. Its commitment to the society does not lie with throwing light on the darker side to the society but it should enlighten the brighter side of the society. Is India Today talk about in detail the success story of thousands of entrepreneurs in India, does it talk about people who have sacrificed their personal lives and are living for others, can it portray their images in its headlines or shall remain obsessed with its belief that circulation increases with hot news that have no impact on a common Indian.

What can an Indian do if he knows that his leader is a jerk, he must have already known this fact. But just imagine what he can do if he knows more about average people who are doing wonders with their lives. Would not these stories be aspiring to the readers? If you believe that India is being pulled down by bureaucracy, then it cannot be blamed only on the Politicians, worst administrative practices of this country or the poor judiciary, but also the media that has failed to influence the value system of Indians. The main responsibility of media is to build a value system and not to frame strategies in improving its bottom line. If India is among the top in the most corrupt countries in the world, media and press that failed to do their bit is one of the main reason. Does an average Indian knows about his constitutional right? I believe he will not and will never know? Then what sort of awareness has the media created in India? Media should emphasize on the good and not the bad as human mind tend to grasp the bad faster than the good, the more an Indian reader reads about corruption the more the possibilities that he would become corrupt some day.

Media should go beyond their routines to create a great country because they are the most appropriate body that can do so? Not the Government, Politicians, Judiciary or any other public bodies? Will the media play their part in creating a better India that is as wealthy, powerful, hospitable, value based as it was centuries ago!
