Manchester United v
Manchester City, Saturday 9th December 2006.
Attendance: 75,858 Old Trafford
Manchester United moved nine points clear of rivals Chelsea at the top of the Premiership table, with a comfortable 3-1 win over neighbours Manchester City in the Manchester derby on Saturday. The
game
marked Ryan Giggs’ 688th appearance for the Red Devils,
second
only now in appearances to United legend, Sir Bobby Charlton.Ferguson’s side must have thought Christmas had come early as two City defensive errors provided Rooney and Ronaldo with gift-wrapped goals along with a well-anticipated effort from Louis Saha, as United grabbed all three points.Unsurprisingly, the match started at a frenetic pace and it was United who drew first blood in the sixth minute as Sylvain Distin made a hash of the clearance from a seemingly innocuous Ronaldo cross, and Rooney pounced with a clinical finish to net his eighth of the season and 50th goal in the Premiership.United pressed forward at every opportunity, and Rooney was denied a second as his piledriver from the edge of the box was well saved by Nicky Weaver.City had their chances too, with Samaras’volley producing a fine save from Van der Sar halfway through the first
half
.The visitors showed good endeavour, but lacked the final penetrating ball and their frustration was compounded when another defensive mix-up following Gabriel Heinze’s cross let an eager Saha in to bundle past Weaver for United’s second on the stroke of half-time. The resulting injury to Weaver added to City’s woes as the keeper was substituted at the break, forcing manager Pearce to replace him with Andreas Isaksson the Swedish ¤2M summer signing from Rennes. In the second half, City were chasing the game as United continued to exploit gaps in the City midfield on the counter-attack, Saha blazing over at close-range and Giggs’ rising drive tipped over the bar by the impressive Isaksson. The game appeared to be heading towards an inevitable outcome as United’s quick, crisp passing resembled a training routine. Ferguson substituted Saha with John O’Shea operating in a holding role in front of the back four. However, the introduction of Stephen Ireland replacing the injured Claudio Reyna made an instant impact. Ireland’s persistence down the right wing paid off as Hatem Trabelsi collected Ireland’s pass and beat Van der Sar with a curling shot off the bar on 73 minutes. This gave City renewed hope and United a tricky final 15 minutes as the visitors looked to draw level.Damarcus Beasley replaced Micah Richards who was stretchered off, the highly-rated right back looking likely to miss City’s next game. But Christiano Ronaldo put the game beyond doubt on the 84th minute, benefiting from another costly error in the City defence, much to the home fans relief and delight.Towards the end, referee Graham Poll gave Bernado Corradi his second yellow card, after the striker’s unnecessary and obvious dive in the box to complete a miserable afternoon for Stuart Pearce’s men.Stats:
