India's ban on sugar, rice, wheat, pulse exports causes price hikes
India's sudden ban on sugar, rice,
wheat and pulse export to Bangladesh caused not only enormous problems for the businessmen in both sides but also soared the prices of the items in the country, reports BDNews.
The Indian government has suddenly imposed a ban of exporting the four essential items to Bangladesh on June 22 for three months showing the reason of checking inflation and keeping their internal market stable.
BDNEWS Correspondents from Chapainawabganj and Benapole land ports reported that the businessmen in both the countries have been facing the burnt of the ban.
Chapainawabganj Correspondent of BDNEWS Rabiul Hasan Dollar reported that the decision by the Indian government has not only irked the businessmen at Sonamasjid land port, but also their counterpart in exporters of LC Station in Mohdipur of Maldaha district of West Bengal.
In Mohdipur, some 70-80
trucks loaded with rice, wheat and pulse were halted at the other side of the
border, sources said.
The sudden stoppage hit the open market as the price of pulse marked a increase by Tk 10-12 a kg from Tk 48-Tk 50. Price of rice, wheat and sugar is also in upward trend.
"Some 12 rice-laden trucks and 22 pulse laden trucks crossed the border on June 22 while on June 23, it was only four trucks of rice and on June 24, it was two trucks of rice crossed the border to see a total stop from Sunday," said a port source.
The source added that from June 23, India stopped export of pulse and from June 24, they stopped rice, wheat and sugar as well.
"It is an internal matter of the Indian government. But it is affecting the business," Sonamasjid Land Port Exporters and Importers Group general secretary Abu Taleb said adding that many businessmen opened LC (letter of credit) and are now facing serious threat in their businesses.
Benapole correspondent of BDNEWS Asaduzzaman Asad reported that only 612 metric tons of pulse crossed the border from India Saturday after the imposition of ban. Only 10 trucks of pulse crossed Sunday, which got permission on the previous day.
Port sources said hundreds of trucks laden with pulse, sugar, wheat and rice were waiting at the other side of the border at Petrapol for crossing.
Tough security measures were taken at the border from the authorities of both the sides while the Indian side asked its Border Security Force (BSF) to check smuggling of the essentials.
