Burmese military junta's arrived for Bangladesh road-links

Dhaka, Bangladesh
: A Burmese delegation arrived here yesterday to finalize the Burma-Bangladesh road link agreement, according to an official report.

The four-member team, led by Burma ’s Deputy Minister for Construction, Brigadier General Myint Thein, arrived in Dhaka to finalize the 153-kilometre road-link agreement.

Officials of the communications ministry said that the Burmese authorities, in a letter to the Bangladesh government last week, had said that it would like to defer the visit of the team for some time without ascribing any reason for the deferral.

“The letter from the Burmese government had said it will let us know at a later stage the date for sending the team for finalizing the agreement,” said a top official of the communications ministry.

The officials of the communications ministry said the deferral of the visit would cast a shadow on the fate of the road-link, a major component of the ‘Look East policy’ of the present government that was launched in 2002 with a view to strengthening ties with countries in Southeast Asia, particularly with China.

“We think it will not be possible to affect a breakthrough in the project in the remaining tenure of the present government,” said the top official.

The present government will hand over power to the caretaker government in the last week of October after completing its five-year term.

Earlier, in July, the Burmese authorities sent a letter to the Bangladesh government, saying that
Rangoon would send a four-member team led by its Deputy Minister for Construction, Brigadier General Myint Thein, for a three-day visit to finalize the 153-kilometre road-link agreement.

According to the agreement, Bangladesh and Burma will be responsible for planning, Construction and maintenance of the road. Both countries will make land available, free of charge, for the proposed road as well as provide camping facilities for construction personnel, equipment and supplies.

The proposed road will stretch from Taungbro to Kyauktaw in Burma via Ramu-Gundom to Cox’s Bazaar in Bangladesh , and it will be constructed in two phases at an estimated cost of Taka 933.46 crore.
