The Globe and Mail
There's nothing like a good read...and the Globe and Mail is good
reading.
This Canadian newspaper boasts, I feel, the best film
review section in the country. It's film reviewers provide thoughtful and in-depth critiques of current cinema - both domestic and foreign.
Where many newspapers give a general overview of popular mass-market
films, the Globe and Mail goes further...exploring in detail smaller more intimate films from different countries.
Reading the reviews in the Globe and Mail has led me to a
deeper appreciation of the art of film and the artistry and integrity of filmmakers who dare to be different.
My film explorations based on their reviews have led me to films I never
knew existed by directors I never knew existed from countries I never knew had a burgeoning
film community.
I have gained a new appreciation for Italian, French, Chinese, and Swedish filmmaking to name but a few.
The film reviewers at the Globe and Mail look at the heart of a motion picture...what the film is really about...it's subtext, metaphors, symbolism; they study the 'why' of a film...why characters act the way they do, and why the filmmaker has elected to bring this particular story to the screen...in essence the film's reason for being.
Reading a Globe and Mail film review has taught me to view films with a critical eye. I tend to look beneath the surface of a film to mine something deeper from it. I believe this has enriched my film experiences and has allowed me to see everyday life more clearly...to see the subtext and deeper meaning in life all around us.
Read a Globe and Mail film review...then go see the film you have just read about...you will learn to really see a film...and to let moving pictures move you.
