HUMAN RIGHTS ORGANIZATION: Muslims are suffering from discrimination in Europe
The European Organization
for Human Rights, in a report published Thursday 28.5.2009 that a third of Muslims in European countries have suffered from
discrimination against them in the past year, noting that many of them do not make complaints to the lack of confidence in the authorities.
The 11% of the complainants to the racially motivated crimes, according to the report, which adds that the people involved in the acquisition of the nationality of the host country and length of stay is an important factor in their vulnerability to such events.
The
organization says that Muslims who are aged between 16 and 24 years were more vulnerable to discrimination; while not notice little difference between what is a male or female discrimination.
The European Union called on the Organization of the fundamental rights of States in its twenty-seven member countries in order to confront this problem by educating people on the ways to come forward.
According to the report, which is part of a larger study on the experiences of immigrants and minorities in 14 European countries, most incidents of discrimination against Muslims in the workplace?
The Director Morten Kjirom "The number of such incidents in the workplace is very alarming, because the work is an essential part of the process of integration into the community".
The report said that 79% of Muslims who have been subjected to discrimination complaints have not come forward, which means that thousands of cases of discrimination and racist crimes had never heard about it.
While,59% of Muslim respondents believe that they do not make a complaint and nothing will change their status, while 38 percent said they are being discriminated against "over time", thus not making any effort of the complaint.
The study provides evidence that the victims of racism in the European Union are ignorant of their rights, was not known, but 41 percent of the respondents said there are laws that prohibit discrimination against people on the basis of race or color when applying for a post, and 80 percent of them did not know any one to go for advice and guidance in the event of exposure to racial discrimination.
It was concluded by the organization as well that their religious dress, such as the Islamic veil, does not affect the risk of discrimination, as many believe.
