Vermont
wants to secede.
An article by Leonard Doyle published in The Independent and reprinted by Courrier International.
In Vermont, a small
state of 25000 square kilometers and 608000 inhabitants of the USA in the north-east of the country, a separatist movement is gaining ground.
Often pioneer in the art of resistance, Vermont was one of the first states to oppose to slavery, to authorize same-sex marriages and its capital, Montpelier, is the only state of the USA that does not count a McDonald''s restaurant.
Taking advantage of the current anti-Bush sentiment, activists for the independence of the state experience a growing success: T-shirts bearing the slogan "US out of Vermont" flourish in shops and sell like hot cakes.
And Vermont is not alone: in Alaska, Hawaii, Texas, California, and even in New York, supporters of the secession campaign for the separation of their state with the federal government.
