"Let us rescue our
education", is how The Chronicle captions it''s editorial. The Paper quotes the popular wise-saying, Education is the bedrock of every nation. In this regard, the paper recounts on how the first president of Ghana, Dr Kwame Nkrumah pumped so much money into the development of educational infrastracture across the country during his rule. The Chronicle stresses that out of this good educational system puts in place by the first president of Ghana, great men like the former UN Secretary General, Kofi Annan was produced for the development of the nation, arguing that in those days of Dr.Kwame Nkrumah, middle school leavers could speak and write impecable english. It adds that product of our
basic schools and even the tertiary level institutions can never be compered to the product of the afforementioned days, adding that the situation even became worst when the Junior Secondary School (JSS) concept was introduced. The paper refers to reports which indicate that, About 160,
000 pupils who
took part in the Basic Education Certificate Examination could not
pass in most of the
subjects, noting that these pupils would not be selected for placement at any Senior High School to further their education. The Chronicle significantly, notes that the majority of these pupils are from public schools. To this end, the paper categoricaly stresses that the majority of Ghanaians have lost confidence in the public schools which even have trained teachers, and are now sending their wards to private schools, which in most cases lack training teachers, but perform to the satisfaction of all.It then questions that what basically wrong with the public schools that are endowed with trained teachers who come out of our teacher training institutions? The Chronicle contends that if care is not taken to address this situation, education especially in the rural areas would become so poor that it would be difficoult to repair the damage. It therefore calls on Ghana National Association of Teachers,GNAT, The Ghana Education Service, The Government and all stakeholders to hold detailed discussions on the emerging trend of the country''s education system and determine the way of bridging the gap.
