We’ll Provide Adequate Security - Ghana Police
The Police
Administration has expressed its readiness
to provide adequate security during this year’s Yuletide and the Ghana 2008 football tournament.
The Inspector-General of Police, Mr Patrick Acheampong, gave the assurance after the Minister of the Interior, Mr Kwamena Bartels, had presented 66 Tata vehicles to the Police
Administration in Accra yesterday.
The presentation is the first batch of 99 vehicles the
government intends to provide for the Police Service to augment its fleet.
Mr Acheampong said the administration would, from next week, come out with an elaborate programme designed towards meeting the security expectations of the public.
On whether new officers would be recruited to meet the challenges, he said in spite of the inadequate number of personnel in the service, coupled with inadequate logistics, the police were positioned to live up to expectation.
“We have always been able to meet challenges such as providing security for a huge number of demonstrators, among other security challenges in the country, and this one is not an exception,” he stressed.
He thanked the government for supporting the police with such logistics and expressed the hope that the vehicles would be dispatched immediately for their intended use.
Mr Bartels said in view of the spate of crime in the country, particularly on the highways, the government had decided to support the security services to enable them to mobilise to effectively deal with the situation.
He said the presentation was also an indication of the government’s efforts to ensure an effective and efficient Police Service capable of ensuring peace and security in the country.
