All roads
lead to the
Bomb
Harsh V Pant deliberating on Iran’s intentions on the
nuclear issue explains in details the current scenario
regarding Iran’s
acquiring the nuclear bomb in the
immediate future and the point of no return being reached
by its rulers, that may lead to the next world war.
The west vehemently opposes such an ambition but lacks a
coherent response to counter it. For a state, of course, it
is most logical to acquire a nuclear
weapon for it is an
effective deterrent to the misconstrued adventures of
arrogant opponents. If Iraq had nuclear weapons could US
invade it? That is the lesson Iran has learnt. This is
perhaps the easiest and cheapest version of self defense
for a
country saddled as it is with a failing economy and
rising unemployment.
Iran has several favourable conditions now for acquiring
the coveted weapon. A hardliner is at the helm of the
country. U.S. is totally embroiled with Iraq. The newly
elected president of Iran is already in the limelight
because of his outbursts against Israel and a publicity
blitz terming the annihilation of Jews in Europe during the
last war as a myth.
Iran has everything in its favour now. Russia and China may
thwart American and European efforts to drag Iran to UN
Security Council. Iran could so long successfully play the
Europeans against the Americans. Of
late the two realized
the ploy, but it is too late. Iran has revealed its true
colours now. It desperately needs the bomb.
It is a matter of time before the dreaded weapon starts
shining in hands that may not hesitate to use it against
the invaders.
