The Greatest Tennis Star
The long-standing hope of winning all four Grand Slams finally saw the light at the end of
the tunnel.
Roger Federer made it on the clay surface of
Roland Garos by beating Sweden’s Robin Soderling for the first time.previous three finals he lost to Nadal by straight sets in French Open. Federer is now free from reaching any other goal in Tennis Singles, and expected to play in the next 4/5 years that he has in his side being only 27 now.
Roger Federer, the Swiss star has killed two birds with one stone by winning this year’s French Open. He has equaled the number of Grand Slam titles of Pete Sampras his great predecessor by acquiring 14 titles. There is every possibility that he will surpass Pete in the coming years. Before his win of French Open, the critics weighed him less than Pete since he did not have the French Open title in his kitty. The last hurdle is gone, and Roger is now the undisputed king of Tennis of all times.
Leaving behind all the yester years greats like Bjorn Borg, Andre Agassi, John McEnroe, and Jimmy Connors, Federer crossed the hurdle of Pete Sampras, and will remain on the helm for many years to come. In this context, Agassi’s comments on Federer before the final at Roland Garos are worth mentionable. He said, “If he wins he’ll know what an accomplishment he has achieved.” In the last 40 years, Agassi is the only player, who achieved this feat of winning all four Grand Slam titles.
Greats are always greats in their respective times; mere comparison cannot make one better than the other. However, if the number of wins is the parameter for declaring the all time great, then Federer surely stands out from the group.
We the ordinary people judge things on the face value of everything, where as one keen observer of Tennis, who has the rare opportunity to witness all the greats at Roland Garos, opined, “His (Federer) elegance, sheer talent, demeanour, and all round ability is unmatched.”
