Trekker’ dogs to counter insurgency operations The Zoland Times
Guwahati: The recent spurt
of violence in Assam and the inability of the security force to avert such violence have propelled the security forces specially the Army to deploy specially trained ‘trekker' dogs in some of the more sensitive hideouts of the militants across the State.
According to sources, around 300 dogs have already reached Assam.
“The basic objective to bring in these exclusively trained dogs is to detect the land mines and other
explosives hidden beneath the ground before any probable explosion”, informed a well placed source.
“The deployment of trekker dogs would not only help the jawans to carry on the ongoing counter insurgency operations in a better way but would also minimize the number of casualty," said the source.
"These trained dogs could sniff and detect landmines and explosives better than any machines or equipments," informed the sources. Trained dogs has always been a part of the security team in the troubled region for long time but the Army now has laid more stress on it for better results.
"Militant organizations in this part of the country like the ULFA often uses landmines in and around its hideouts, which makes it difficult for the security personnel to enter or launch offensive," the sources said and added that the trained 'detective' or 'trekker' dogs could be of great help in this regard.
"The dogs were given further training with the help of trainers at the Army camps like Dinjan in Dibrugarh
district, Rangia and Tamulpur in Kamrup district and Misamari in Sonitpur district besides the Tezpur," the sources said.
"While some of the dog units have already been deployed at most of the sensitive places in the state some are in the verge of completing the final round of trainings," the sources said and informed that these dogs could detect any kind of explosives used by the ultras and the security forces.
