Wonders performed by the
anaesthetist Nothing can explain the magic of an
anaesthetist better than this scene from a Hollywood film.
A neuro-Surgeon-Turned-Serial Killer neatly cuts open the
skull of a man while he is wide
awake. The Man who is
under anaesthesia feels no pain. Even as the man talks to
him the mad doctor cuts a piece of the man’s
brain and
begeins to cook it. Gross,as it may seem the anaesthetists
think it is possible.
It is very similar to a team of
doctors performing a Brain surgery in which the
patient undergoing the
surgical procedure is wide awake. The
patient has to be necessarily awake during certain surgical
procedures on the brain. Only the anaesthetist can pull
off this miracle,

wonders that can be performed by the anaesthelist are being
explained to the layman at the three-day “first public
anaesthesia
exhibition” at Nagarjuna Hospital.
“The Anaesthetist’s job is very much like that of
an aeroplane pilot. He has to methodically check all this
equipment before taking off, that is,putting the patient
under sedation. Then he has to ensure a smooth flight and
a safe landing,that is,bring back the patient to
consciousness,”says Dr.KrishnaMurthi. An operation theatre
and an intensive care unit have been recreated at the
exhibition.
Vice-Chancellor of N.T.R.University of
Health Sciences R.Sambasiva Rao inaugurated the unique
exhibition organized by the society on Friday i.e.on 14-10-
2005. The society affiliated to the World Federation of
Anaesthesiologists has 16,000 members in 19 states,four
metro branches and 110 cities in the country.
