Chine finished building world’s
highest railway line China announced on Saturday the completin of the world’s highest=elevatin railway. The Qinghai-Tiber Railway stretches 1,956
km from Xining to Lhasa. The announcement was made at the Lhasa railway statin, marking the ocuntry’s success in making the impossible possibleby building a railway line across 5,000-metre-high mountain ranges and a 550-km long frozen belt. In a congratulatory letter Chinese President Hu Jintao termed it an”Unprecedented triumph” in railway history. Tibet’s regional
capital saw merry-making crowds of builders and officials,and ordinary citizens hailed in Tibetan and Mandarin the completion of the railway that is expected to become an efficient and affordable means of transportation. “In my younger days, I thought we would have to wait for 100
years for a railway inmy hometown”,said Qamba Zoinzhu, a 58 years-old businessmanin Lhasa, the capital of the Tiber Autonomous Region. The Constructin of the 1,142-km-long Golmud-Lhasa section,which runs across the Kunlun and Tanggula mountain ranges,started in June 2001. It has cost 24 billion Yuan(about $3 billion) so far. The highest point of the railway is 5,072m above sea level, at least 200m higher than the Peruvian railway in the Andes, which was previouslythe World’s highest such track. It will carry 75 per cent of Tibet’s inbound cargo. In five years, the railway will stretch further into Tibet, extending from Lhasa to Xigaze and Nyingchi,according to the Ministry-Xinhua.
