Two month old
child and
wife of
village headman arrested In a gross travesty of justice, the wife and the two month old child of a village headman were arrested by the military authorities in southern Chin state because of the headman’s failure to report the presence of an armed group in the area.
Mrs. Sun Par (27) wife of Mr. Lawng Thui, the headman of La Lui village, Matupi Township, Chin state, Burma and his two month old son were detained by the military in the last week of June. Mother and child were arrested for the headman’s failure to report the presence of the Chin National Army (CNA) in La Lui village areas earlier in June.
Mr. Lawng Thui fled La Lui village on June 14 after receiving information of his impending arrest. Mrs. Sun Par and the child were detained as her husband was not home when the officials came to arrest him.
The whereabouts of Mr. Lawng Thui is not known, said a villager. He told
Zoland News Network, “The authorities should arrest the headman not his wife or children. There is no such law. Who will look after his
children and where will they live.”
Mrs. Sun Par and her son were arrested by Mr. Nyunt Soe, Chairman of Matupi Township Peace and Development Council and Captain Aung Kyaw of Light Infantry Battalion (LIB) 140. How long she will be detained and what the sentence would be like could not be ascertained.
Mrs. Sun Par is a mother of five children. Four other children are being taken care of by relatives.
