Gadgets (The Economic Times dated 1.8.2006)
Present day cell phones and laptops come with multiple features than we actually use or require. When a
technology survey was conducted by Economics Times for Synovate, many people were found to be unaware of the fast advancing communication technology leave alone understand the capabilities of the multiple features included in them.
They simply love a gadget which is easy to use, compact, compatible with other devices and is superior in technology. They like to buy gadgets with all the facilities such as Bluetooth, Wi-Fi and an ability to hook on to WiMax when the service will be available.
The technical survey conducted among 1000
respondents in 10 cities revealed that most users were unaware about Wi-Fi and WiMax. Only 53% were aware of Bluetooth.
The awareness about Bluetooth, the technology that enables devices to connect wirelessly within a ten feet area (also called personal area network) was as follows:
Age
group Percentage
25 to 30
63
31 to 35
42
36 to 40
41
When Synovate surveyors asked the respondents to describe Wi-Fi and WiMax, the vaguest of definitions emerged. Only about 11% of the 25-30 age group were familiar with Wi-Fi, the
wireless technology with a range of about 100 feet that enable wireless access-more than Bluetooth- within homes and offices and were unaware of WiMax, the wireless intra-city technology with a 30 km range enabling very high speed data transfers. In the higher age group only 8% respondents were aware of Wi-Fi.
Consumer education through campaigns about new technologies by manufacturers is essential for awareness which will lead to increase in usage of these present day technologies. Digital gadgets are liked much today but the sheer complexity frightens the users. It is no wonder then that 62% of the affluent Indians Synovate surveyed said an emphatic ‘No’, when they were asked as to whether they would like their house to be wireless .
Responses from the various cities surveyed were as under :
Mumbai ,Kolkata ,Hyderabad ,Kochi ,Ahmedabad
opposed
Bangalore and Candigarh
Favor 50% oppose 50%
Delhi
Mixed bag
Majority respondents from Chennai and Pune, the city of
beautiful roads favored wireless homes. As for Pune, the city of beautiful roads, it is no wonder that the respondents favored wireless homes so that their beautiful roads will remain beautiful for ever.
