With the increased media coverage, we have witnessed an exponential growth in the number of news channels and newspapers all across the country. Whether it’s the Kargil War or Prince episode, we have it right in our drawing rooms. Thanks to our media (print or electronic), never before has the public been so involved and informed. But it has its side effects too. “
Mumbai Mirror” is just an example. A local daily in Mumbai, it comes free with the legendary
newspaper giant “The Times Of India”. “Mumbai Mirror” in the role of a newspaper is nothing but the antithesis of the very word “Newspaper”. Instead of
quality news, it sells trash that is not only non-informative but also immoral. In an effort to grab the attention of the readers, the front page always contains a hyperbolized or inflaming headline like “Pandu, PhD” or “Don’t ever mess with your Boss” or the latest “Love ke liye saala kuch bhi karega”. The rest of the
pages follow the same theme with cheap thrills like murders sensationalized or extra-marital affairs. As if that was not enough, you are treated with one or two pages of almost-nude foreign models. Sometimes you
wonder whether it is a daily newspaper or a soft porn magazine. It claims to cater to the
needs of an average mumbaiite. But by the time you reach the last
page, you wonder if it caters to the needs of even a right-thinking human. The amount of filthy news it publishes is unbelievable. One fine day the front-page news was about the mating of dogs of two of our top Bollywood actress!! Such is the quality of its content. It’s a shame that highly reputed newspaper like “The Times Of India” has chosen to be a catalyst in its distribution just for some extra moolah. As for “Mumbai Mirror” itself, it’s a big no-no for all those who seek and expect quality News.
