This street shines,
thanks to a 70 year old aunty. We all keep our house clean. But what about the surrounding areas. Do we have double standards. Keep our house
clean but litter the street and the area around it. Well St Francis Avenue is always spic and span, thanks to 70 year old Mrs Bertha Noronha popularly known as Noronha Aunty. She started cleaning up the area in the year 1998. Her method was to seperate
dry waste from
wet waste. Dry waste is what's man-made, like paper, cardboard, bottles etc. Wet waste is what's natural, like vegetable, fruit, fish, chicken waste etc. The dry waste is given to an NGO for rag pickers who re-cycle the same for a living. The wet waste is used as plant fertiliser after it is allowed to decompose in pits.
aunty also sees to it that the drains do not get clogged due to throw-away plastic carry bags. This prevents flooding during the rainy season. Our world needs more and more people like Aunty Noronha. A sign at the entrance of St Francis Avenue says it all; 'This street shines. Thanks to Mrs. Martha Noronha'.
