A 23-year-old student battered his girl friend to death, at Juhu, last night.
The girl, Megha Doshi (24), died at
Nanavati Hospital within hours of the assault.
The youth, Pratik Gupta, walked into Juhu Police Station and surrendered himself.
The incident happened at about 9.20 pm in the parking lot of Narsee Monjee Institute of Management Studies (NMIMS), where Pratik is a part-time MBA student.
Juhu police said Pratik told them he had an argument with Megha. She apparently wanted that they get married. But he was unwilling.
Then in a fit of rage Pratik picked up a stone and hit Megha on the head, repeatedly.
Megha was taken to Cooper Hospital by some friends who came rushing after hearing her cries.
On the suggestion of the doctors at Cooper Hospital that Megha required special treatment, the girl was shifted to Nanavati Hospital, police said.
‘‘The patient was admitted with acute loss of blood and was dead on the operating table,’’ said a doctor who attended on Megha. ‘‘She was also suffering from thalassaemia minor.’’
Abrasions on left suggest scuffle Pratik was also taken to Cooper Hospital for a medical examination.
Abrasions on the left hand suggested there may have been a scuffle during the assault, a police official said.
“The postmortem will be conducted at 11 am today and only after that will we be able to confirm anything,’’ he said.
Friends of the two young people were obviously shocked over the incident.
‘‘Pratik was a quiet guy who would not harm even a fly, let alone his best friend,’’ said a friend, who requested anonymity.
‘‘Megha and Pratik were very good friends. But we had no idea if she wanted to marry Pratik.’’ the friend said.
Pratik is a manager with Countryside Financials. Megha worked with stockbrokers, M K Realtors, at Lower Parel. She had completed the MBA from NMIMS last year.
Father in Guwahati on business The girl’s father has a transport business in Guwahati and family members were still trying to contact him this morning.
