Newspaper Review by: Arunya

This is with reference to the article which appeared in the Sunday edition of The Hindu. It dealt with the plight of Indian
women in the corporate world. Why do only some proportion of the women in India make it to the top positions? In India, the general trend is to push the boys of the family to pursue a job that would give enough returns to sustain the household. Where women are generally considered the home-makers, the men, the bread-winners. In a family with working man and woman, the income that comes through the woman is generally considered as an add-on to the income earned by the man. Conditions for the woman becomes tighter once she begets a child. To manage the house as well as to excel in the work-front becomes quite difficult for her. Thus, she satiates herself with the money she earns and the desire, the passion, the enthusiasm to rise (in her workplace) drops down. Thus, only a handful of women are able to make it to the top echelons.
