TCS set to do a first in checking
online piracy.(Business Standard dated 2.8.2006) TCS is developing the world’s first anti-piracy system for ISPs which will help them to detect
downloading of
illegal programmes by
individual users (by the way how can a individual user know whether the programme downloaded is legal or illegal?) and alert programme
developers about it. It is the first such technology attempt in the world against illegal downloading. As on date there is no technology available to ISPs to check online piracy. Even Bill Gates of Microsoft who desired business at the speed of thought never seems to have thought of a software to check online piracy! Or is it that he has no time to think about it or having attempted could not succeed in it? The proposed software is designed to recognize the legal and illegal versions of the programmes downloaded by the individual users. (O.K. as on date how can an individual user recognizes this?) It can help ISPs track their
subscribers’ downloading activities. So that they can alert the original developers and initiate action as per the developers instructions. The action by the ISPs could be anything from sending warnings to the subscribers about his illegal activity to limiting the speed and quantum of downloads by the particular subscribers and jamming the line while the illegal downloads are in progress. In a way, the software will be a device for ISPs world wide to enforce anti piracy laws. Internet piracy round the world is estimated to be around $6 to 7 billion and the film and music industry are up in arms to prevent the same at any cost.
