"The present US India
relations in the field of bilateral
strategic partnership will not be influenced by the fate of the 123
Agreement" asserted a Senior US Official reacting to reports of
mounting
opposition in India from the Left parties against Govt''s haste in going ahead with INDO-US
Civil Nuclear Co operation Agreement. .Mr James Clad,Deputy Asst
Secretary of State for Defence, for South and Southeast Asia.was
addressing an inter active meeting organised by the '' Obserever Research Foundation ''at New Delhi Elaborating
his view, he
added "the profound linkage of US India relations went
much beyond the 123 Agreement and covered many other facets and
referred to their consistency in maintaining cordial
relationship with
INDIA against the background of emerging trends in changing trade
relations and security challenges in the world stage. He
remarked that the view " US had plans to deal with India in a subservient
relationship " as laughable and added this was "far from truth."
Admitting that the major calculations in US - India defence ties
were " the procurement of equipments " he added the opposition came
from the present beneficiaries ,in continuing the ''static system.''
Asserting that the products from US platform were far more superior
in quality he remarked ,it was advisable to diversify the
purchases to different
countries. This policy will enable us to take
advantage of spreading the'' offset clause '' (which made purchases more
costly} across various countries instead of one. KONTHAI
