a host of
reality shows are being aired, whose proceedings millions of indians within and outside our country follow with the keenest attention. the politics which constitutes the show in its quest for fame and the struggle which portrays the candidates to be swimming against the current for the winners trophy have us on the egde of our seats. however the moral fable of such shows, in the deep consciousness of my mind, is more about segregation than talent. it''s not so much about the innate capability to sing or dance as it''s about communal identification. our choices are narrowed down on the contestent of our region or religion without a compunction, a silent terrorist then emerges which operates to impinge on our national integrity. if the irony is not very evident then i am afraid there are no pre-defined words which can substantiate my point. our sense of national contour is highlighted through these reality shows. the so-called "missed out'' talented contestent is later touted by the eminent names of the film industry and ultimately he avails himself of a film personage''s signature ambition.so what if one can''t lift the winners trophy, he''s still a winner. this cliched view reflects the failures made in making the judgements on the part of the panel of juries appointed for the shows and on the voting public.such reality shows points at some contentious issues which makes the composition of any biography of any nation worth reading.the partiality shown to the contestents is a testimony to the fact that we indians generally avoid choosing the best when it comes to picking up the man who stands on the top of the pyramid representing a community.the Bengalis votes for the Bengali contestents, the Punjabis for thei punjabis etc and this encourages the shadow lines of demarcation that pervades the minds of the people. "we are as much foreigners in our own country as we are beyond the border".it is also instrumental for political parties to make the public feel its presence through such shows.our PM and Congress President Sonia Gandhi had priveleged two of the much loved Indian Idol contestents with a private meeting.i wonder if the American President or any of his representative from his political circle had endowed such a privelege to any of the contestents of the American Idol show. also the efficacy of such shows not only shares the hegemony of communities over one another, but also unveils the melancholic status of the Indian girls as no "one" Indian girl with all her beauty and abilities that the world recognises has been filtered through to victory.in this vein, the myriads of reality shows with its fair share of criticisms appears like a failure and its purpose futile in comparison with the singular American reality show. now, the platform of the shows are utilized to promote the up-coming films.in this ambience the purity of the shows is contaminated but we willingly accept this blatant barefaced threats to the identity of the nation, to our girls and to the methodology behind the working of such shows which is to distinctly honour the young talents.a nation is not a figure on the map, a nation is not a piece of land with its share of mountains, lakes and forests; a nation is its population having a unified existence in it. let us not fail to comprehend this simple fact and enact in all the simplest of our actions that we are One. lets us celebrate our diversity and uniqueness.
