In keeping POK (Pakistan Occupied Kashmir) from prying eyes, Pakistan has neglected
relief work in aftermath of earthquake and preferred taking
aid from geographically distant friend America than geographically linked India.
Pakistan moved troops to the LOC fearing that India might take advantage from the situation and attack – a clear measure of distrust. The much-vaunted Pakistani
army had wasted no
time in October 1999 to cross LOC and occupy Indian territory with lightning speed. This time it could not organise more than a few shovels and spades even two days after the deadly earthquake of October 8, 2005.
The regime also was worried about its strategic assets, of international notoriety, in Kahuta, Chashma and Khushab. The fate of Muzafarbad ,Bagh or Rawalkot had little importance. For all the tears that they have shed for the people of Kashmir, help was sluggish at best even in this hour of urgent need. Unable or unwilling to send the army it seems Musharraf’s Muridie Mobsters like Jamat ul Dawat and Lashkar –e- Tayyeba have been deployed in far flung area to undertake the command of relief and rehabilitation especially in Frontier province and hilly parts of POK. They have promptly moved in with sate of art equipment as funds, manpower and logistics are not a problem for them, which only conforms that Islamic forces in Pakistan are very well endowed, active and increasingly popular and thus more difficult to dislodge or rein in. They also have armed volunteers who admit to favor the jehad in Kashmir.
Massive destruction in upper reaches of POK, Gilgit and Baltistan has forced UNO to appeal for extensive western aid. An
airlift on the pattern of the famous Berlin Airlift has been organised, which is proving to be vastly inadequate, because Pakistan just does not have the capacity to provide relief before winter sets in.
