Solar power plant
If any form of energy is abundantly available in India, it can be only solar energy. We read about
solar powered lights, cookers and heaters. Now the concept of solar power plants is gradually catching up. With large-sized solar heaters, steam can be generated and the same can be used to actuate a steam turbine which, in turn, generates electric power through a generator, Recently, the tourist island of Bangaram, in Lakshadweep Islands, has acquired a solar power plant, Hitherto, it had to depend solely on diesel power plants, for which diesel was being transported from the mainland at the high cost. The Bangalore based electronic division of the Bharat Heavy Electrials unit had earlier installed a solar power plant of 10Kw capacity. This was upgraded recently to a 50Kw hybrid solar power plant to ensure full power supply needed for the island. Till now, BHEL has installed eight such solar power plants on tourist islands.
